Ensuring fire safety and compliance in modern construction begins with using wall assemblies that have been rigorously tested by accredited fire testing agencies. Logix Brands, is excited to highlight four UL-listed wall assemblies that incorporate Halo Exterra:

  1. NFPA-285 Exterior Wall System (EWS0025)
    • Steel stud, exterior wall assembly
    • A fire-resistant exterior wall assembly that leverages Halo Exterra for effective insulation and compliance.
  2. NFPA-285 Exterior Wall System (EWS0026)
    • Steel stud, exterior wall
    • Another UL-certified exterior wall system, fire-tested to include Halo Exterra.
  3. UL Fire-Rated Wall System (BXUV.V306)
    • Wood stud, bearing and non-bearing
    • A 1-hour fire-rated assembly that incorporates Halo Exterra for enhanced safety and insulation performance.
  4. UL Fire-Rated Wall System (BXUV.V332)
    • Wood stud, bearing
    • A 2-hour fire-rated wall assembly designed specifically for interior fire exposure, utilizing Halo Exterra.

What Is NFPA 285

Two of the assemblies—Design No. EWS0025 and No. EWS0026—are NFPA 285 complaint, meaning they have passed a stringent multi-story fire test.  NFPA 285 is intended to measure how exterior wall assemblies resist flame. The test itself measures the vertical and horizontal flame propagation across a 2-storey wall assembly over a 30-minute period. To pass the test, the flames are not permitted to spread beyond an identified boundary and cannot reach above a specified temperature threshold.

What is UL-263?

The UL fire-rated wall assemblies, design No. BXUV.V306 and BXUV.V332 also measure flame resistance but from a pass-through and temperature perspective only.

The test standard used to elevate these wall assemblies is UL 263 – Fire tests of building construction and materials. The test applies a flame to one side of the wall assembly for a specified amount of time. To achieve a passing result the flame cannot pass through to the opposite side and the opposite side of the wall assembly must remain below a certain temperature.

The objective is to determine how well the wall assembly limits flames from passing through the assembly to limit the spread within a building and have it contained to a single space. Based on how long the assembly prevented the passage of flame through the assembly or limited the maximum temperature on the opposite side the wall assembly will be assigned a fire resistance rating in terms of length of time.

Why UL-Listed Fire Rated Assemblies Matter

  1. Fire Safety
UL-certified systems offer proven benchmarks for fire resistance, giving occupants critical evacuation time in emergencies.
  2. Code Compliance
These systems simplify code compliance, giving architects and contractors confidence in meeting local regulations.
  3. Versatile Design
With options for both steel and wood studs, as well as gypsum and foam insulation, UL assemblies offer flexibility without compromising safety.
